Southern Super Stars Win Legends League Cricket 2024
The thrilling final of the Legends League Cricket tournament will surely spark debates about how the Southern Super Stars let the game slip from a seemingly winning position. They appeared to have the match under control but faltered as Yusuf Pathan unleashed a barrage of sixes, keeping his team in contention until the end.
In the first innings, the Super Stars squandered their momentum. At 145/2 with 17 balls left, they seemed poised for a total near 200, thanks to Hamilton Masakadza’s commanding 83. However, they stumbled and ended with a modest 164, a total that looked well below par, considering their earlier position of strength.
Moving to the Super Over, two boundaries are usually enough to post a competitive score, but Martin Guptill ensured the Southern Super Stars took charge. He smashed back-to-back sixes in the first two deliveries, setting the tone and reeling the opposition. Guptill fell soon after, but the damage was done. Diwesh Pathania, who had bowled effectively in the first innings, struggled under pressure in the Super Over. With the dry ball in hand, one missed length resulted in a six, followed by another mistake that sealed the game.
Despite Irfan Pathan’s disappointment, his team fought till the last ball. While it wasn’t a complete team effort, the result is what counts. They missed their opportunity even with Yusuf Pathan at the crease and only seven runs needed in the final over of regular play. Scoring 13 runs in the Super Over wasn’t enough, as they came up short.
Ultimately, the Southern Super Stars emerged victorious, winning the third edition of the Legends League Cricket. Although they nearly choked in regulation play against Yusuf Pathan, they took advantage of the second chance in the Super Over and claimed the title.
