Kane Williamson joins the Titans-A maximum of 87 players were expected to be selected when 405 individuals were scheduled to go up for bid in the IPL mini auction in Kochi.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad team chose to release their captain Kane Williamson before the upcoming season after a dismal campaign the previous year.
The seasoned veteran returned to the auction table as a result, surprising everyone.
Williamson was snatched up by the reigning champion Gujarat Titans at the beginning of the IPL Player Auction on Friday, just as questions about his future as a T20I cricket player had begun to surface.
Kane Williamson, a former captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad, was the first purchase made by Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2023 mini-auction.
For the starting price of Rs 2 crore, the defending champion Titans were able to get the services of a quality right-hander.
The Gujarat Titans quickly signed Williamson for INR 2 Crore since they needed an experienced player in the centre. Later, while still in the room, head coach Ashish Nehra said that the team was prepared to spend more money on Williamson if necessary.

Nehra said that Kane would be regularly a part of Gujarat’s Playing XI and also gave an exciting information that the Team management are looking to make Kane at batting at No. 3.
According to Nehra, they were fortunate that the management was able to recruit players as much as possible while still having some cash on hand.
He claimed that they were aware from the start that they couldn’t afford players like Cameron Green or Sam Curran because they would command high salaries.
He declared that they were thrilled to have been able to fill the openings that needed to be filled and that he was truly shocked and dazed that they were able to acquire Kane Williamson for such a low cost.
Fans and other spectators of the game were surprised that other Team management did not bid for a player like Kane who was a versatile veteran in his game.
