IPL’s new rule, ‘Impact Player’ benefits the senior players
What is “Impact Player” Rule :
According to the “Impact Player Rule,” a team may name up to four of these players in its team of 15 before the game, and they may be replaced at any point before the 14th over of an innings.
However, if the starting XI includes all four players from outside, that player must be an Indian. An overseas player replaces another as an impact substitute only if the playing XI features three players from abroad.
How’s it going to benefit the senior players?
The new IPL regulation requiring a “Impact Player” may provide some senior players with the “second wind” they need as their career comes to an end, according to coaches and specialists with different franchises.
Coincidently, four veterans with nearly finished careers like Amit Mishra (166 wickets), Piyush Chawla (157 wickets), Mohit Sharma (92 wickets), and Ishant Sharma (84 wickets)—were purchased at their individual base rates of Rs 50 lakh each.
The Lucknow Super Giants, who are coached by the battle-tested duo of Gautam Gambhir and Vijay Dahiya, chose Mishra. Ishant was signed by Delhi Capitals, and Ashish Nehra, the head coach of Gujarat Titans, decided to give Ishant an opportunity because they had bowled together when Mohit was at his peak for CSK.
Under the condition of anonymity, a domestic coach who has worked closely with Gambhir says,
“Amit Mishra is a fantastic call by Gautam and his coaching staff. Look, you don’t need to check his skills as he is among the top three wicket-takers of all time in IPL. Yes, he is 40 years, isn’t the best of fielders and can’t hit sixes at the end. But now you don’t need to keep him in playing XI for entire duration,”
According to analyst Deep Dasgupta, the release of “Impact Player” is good news for all the one-dimensional players who were previously unable to obtain IPL contracts due to the altered nature of the sport.
Dasgupta said,
“Mumbai Indians might not need Piyush at all at the Wankhede. But if they are playing at the Chepauk, then why not? He is a smart operator, can still make a difference if he is used judiciously. For me, ‘Impact Player’ is one rule that will bring in more specialists into the play. We are more and more looking at multi-dimensional skills but even 1-D players will remain in business”
Gujarat Titans may rely on Mohit with his subtle variations, change of speed, and usage of knuckle balls on tracks where Shivam Mavi might be destroyed.
The widespread belief is that bowlers will prove to be more successful as “Impact Players” in the bigger context of the tournament, but it won’t be known until a good number of matches are played in this year’s IPL.
