Zverev was fined $40,000 for his actions
The ATP fined world number three Alexander Zverev $40,000 on Thursday after he was kicked out of the Mexico Open in Acapulco this week after repeatedly banging his racquet on the umpire’s chair.
Zverev also forfeits his winnings from the $31,570 prize pool and all ATP ranking points earned at the event, according to the ATP.
“A second investigation of the incident is now being conducted in accordance with ATP standards,” the ATP stated.
Zverev, the defending Acapulco singles winner, slammed his racquet three times right below umpire Alessandro Germani’s feet before taking his seat and then rising to verbally insult the official and smash the chair one more time.
Among those criticizing Zverev were Rafael Nadal, competing in Acapulco, and Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, playing in Dubai this week.
