WI vs ENG: West Indies have been fined for slow over rate in the 1st Test against England

The West Indies cricket team have been fined and have lost 2 points in the WTC standings because of their slow over rate against England in their first test match which took place at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. The Windies team eventually drew the test match against England but have caused some damage for themselves as the team has to give 40% of their match fee as a fine.

Due to the Windies bowling contingent failing to bowl their respective overs in the allotted time given to them, they can’t refrain from the fine and the points deduction. 

The ICC have laid out some rules regarding these types of incidents in the game. In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over if their side fails to bowl in the allotted time. In addition to this law, as per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, a side is penalised one point for each over short.

The West Indies bowler Braithwaite had been found guilty of the same and didn’t put any counter argument on the case due to which the situation was passed on without a proper hearing as well. With this points deduction in the World Test Championship standings, the West Indies have slipped to eighth position in the table now below Bangladesh.
