Virat Kohli is vital to India in T20Is despite not being captain: Ajit Agarkar.
Former India fast bowler Ajit Agarkar believes Virat Kohli would continue to play an important role for India in T20Is despite no longer serving as captain. Kohli will play T20Is for the first time under skipper Rohit Sharma when India takes on the West Indies in a three-match series beginning Wednesday at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Agarkar stated that it is up to the team management to inform Kohli if he should go after the bowlers aggressively or play the anchor’s position that he did when he led the team till last year.
After the T20 World Cup last year, Kohli ended his four-year tenure as India’s T20I captain. While he indicated before the World Cup that he would stand down to focus on guiding the teams in Tests and ODIs, the Delhi star was fired as ODI captain before stepping down as Test captain earlier this year.
“One of the most impressive aspects of Virat Kohli’s captaincy was that he never allowed his form to deteriorate. His runs didn’t dry up with the added pressure, which may happen occasionally – it didn’t happen with him, which was also part of his excellence as a captain “Agarkar appeared on the Star Sports show Game Plan.
“So, now that the leadership burden is off, there may still be a role for him, whether it’s to play a bit more aggressively or to bat the entire innings while the other players bat around him and bat more aggressively.”
“I believe it is a decision for the team management, but Virat Kohli’s runs are so important for India – every time he makes runs, India invariably wins.” As a result, his form is critical to India’s victory,” the former bowler remarked.
Kohli has recently been chastised for taking a long time to get going in the shortest version of the game, but his number game is powerful. Kohli appeared in 10 T20Is in 2021, scoring 290 runs with four fifties at an average of over 74.
Kohli will be trying to make a mark in the T20Is against West Indies, who previously defeated England 3-2 in a 5-match home series, after receiving the support of his skipper Rohit despite a disappointing ODI series in which he scored only 26 runs.
