IPL 2025 Auction: Glenn Maxwell Reflects on ‘Beautiful’ Exit from
Sunil Gavaskar named Glenn Maxwell as the new captain of RCB
The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) were not only trying to rebuild their roster for the next three to four years, but they were also looking for a new captain at the 2022 IPL super auction. Virat Kohli, who had captained the squad since 2013, has stepped down at the end of the 2021 season.
RCB was one of the busiest clubs in the auction, spending significant money on Harshal Patel (10.75 crore), Wanindu Hasaranga (10.75 crore), Josh Hazlewood (7.75 crore), and Faf du Plessis (7 cr). Previously, they have retained Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, and Mohammed Siraj.
Sunil Gavaskar, the renowned Indian cricketer, has chosen Australian all-rounder Maxwell to captain the team, with the roster completely established for the 2022 season. Gavaskar believes that giving Maxwell more responsibility will make him a better player and help him score more runs.
Gavaskar said Sporstak, “I think if Glenn Maxwell is given the responsibility, a different sort of Maxwell would be witnessed in IPL.” Last year, he batted wonderfully, most likely with the huge auction in mind, but he was retained as a result, which was probably excellent for him.”
“We’ve seen guys who bat effectively yet score 30-40 runs fast and get out without finishing the job—especially if the team needs 70 or 80 runs more. However, when these same players were given more responsibility, they performed well, demonstrating improved shot selection. So, if Maxwell is appointed captain, he will score more goals and play better “Gavaskar remarked.
Maxwell is the captain of the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League (BBL) and was the RCB’s greatest batsman in the 2021 season, scoring 513 runs in 15 games with a strike rate of 144.10. In an interview with Star Sports, Harshal Patel, who was re-signed by RCB, named Faf du Plessis as an option for captaincy. Faf has previously captained the South African cricket team for several years.
