Vinicius Junior guides Real Madrid to their 14th UCL trophy
Vinicius Junior scored the decisive goal to hand Real Madrid a 1-0 win over Liverpool Football Club in the UEFA Champions League.
Real Madrid came up triumphant in an intense affair against Liverpool at the Stade de France, thanks to the goal by Vinicius Junior.
First Half
After the game had a 35 minute delayed start, Liverpool started off quickly off the blocks. They pressed Madrid high up the pitch and created numerous half chances but were unable to find a way past Thibaut Courtois.
The Belgian keeper was in outrageous form tonight, as he and the Madrid defense frustrated the Liverpool attack.
He made a big save to deny Sadio Mane and Liverpool a goal. Mane cut in, onto his right foot and shot at goal but, Courtois was up to the challenge, as his finger tip save diverted the ball onto the post and into his hands.
Along with Courtois, Dani Carvajal was at his very best, keeping the wiry Luis Diaz quiet. Diaz was unable to get the better of the Spaniard, something no one has been able to do, since his move to Liverpool.
Madrid started growing in the game, starting to unsettle the Liverpool defense a bit but, to no avail. But, in the closing stage of the first half, Benzema swept the ball into the net.
After a lengthy delay, VAR ruled the goal out for offside. A big let off for Liverpool.
The first half ended with the scoreline reading Liverpool FC 0-0 Real Madrid.
Second Half
Madrid started off well in the second half, being dominant on the ball. They were able to stitch dangerous passes in their final third, causing the Reds defense, some problems.
In the 59th minute, Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior tapped the ball into an empty net at the far post, to put the Los Blancos 1-0 up.
A clever reverse ball by Luka Modric, bypassed the Liverpool press and set Valverde through. His low cross found Vinicius Junior waiting at the far post, who finished it gleefully.
No matter of offside this time as Madrid were a step away from a record 14th UCL Title.
Liverpool tried to crank up the pressure but the Madrid defense stood firm.
A couple of big chances for Liverpool but Courtois was not going to be beaten tonight. Salah had a glorious chance but, Courtois was equal to Salah’s brilliance and he kept the Madrid goal intact.
Heartbreak for Jurgen Klopp and his men, again. In the span of a couple of weeks, Liverpool lost 2 trophies.
Manchester City staged a 5 minute comeback to help them lift the Premier League and tonight, Real Madrid went on to lift the UEFA Champions League.
Albeit the disappointment, Liverpool fans should not be disheartened. They already won 2 trophies and were on the verge of winning another 2.
Grass is always greener on the other side but we are pretty sure that with Jurgen Klopp at the helm for 4 more years, there will be many more finals and many more trophies for Liverpool Football Club in the forthcoming seasons.
The Liverbird will be back on it’s perch, soon!
