South Africa edge past New Zealand to make it 4 wins in 4
South Africa won a closely fought encounter vs the hosts New Zealand women to make it 4 out of 4 wins in the ICC Women’s World Cup.
The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first.
New Zealand had a shaky start as they lost Suzie Bates in the early stages but, Amelia Kerr who joined Sophie Devine stitched together a formidable partnership.
Despite losing Amelia Kerr and Amy Sattherthwaite in quick succession, New Zealand skipper Sophie Devine went on to score her half century.
New Zealand middle order collapsed as they lost 6 wickets for just 30 runs in the final stages of their innings. Sophie Devine was the top scorer with 93. Her knock included 12 fours and 1 six.
New Zealand were bowled out for 228 runs with 2.1 overs to spare.
In reply South Africa started off well, losing only 1 wicket in the first 10 overs, making 33 runs.
At the halfway mark of the chase, South Africa were 105/2, needing 124 runs in the next 25 overs to win the match.
South Africa were in a spot of bother as they needed 59 off the last 10 overs with two new batsmen at the crease. Sune Luus who had brought up her 50 was dismissed in the 41st over by Hannah Rowe.
Player of the match Marizanne Kapp shone with the bat and ball to help South Africa over the line in a nervy win. South Africa chased the target down in 49.3 overs with only 2 wickets in hand.
South Africa women have won all their 4 matches and have strengthened their second spot, behind Australia only on Run Rate, whereas New Zealand stay in 4th having won only 2 off their 5 matches.
Top 4 qualify for the Semi finals, so the hosts would have to perform well in their remaining matches. They now take on defending champions England who got their first win against India.
As for South Africa, they take on Australia in what is to be a top of the table clash.
