Shreyas Iyer & KKR Split Ahead of IPL 2025: Reports

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are reportedly set to part ways with their title-winning captain, Shreyas Iyer, ahead of the IPL 2025 season. As per sources, Iyer, who led KKR during the 2022 and 2024 IPL seasons, will not feature in KKR’s retention list submitted to the BCCI this Thursday. Shreyas Iyer’s contract negotiations hit a standstill after he sought a higher retention price, compelling KKR’s management to reconsider his position within the team.

Iyer, bought by KKR for ₹12.25 Crore in the 2022 IPL auction, has been a pivotal figure for the franchise. However, factors such as fitness concerns, recent on-field performances, and his current international standing have reportedly made the franchise hesitant to invest in his retention at a premium price.

Despite being a proven IPL-winning captain, Shreyas Iyer’s desire for an elevated retention fee has led to interest from other IPL franchises, including Punjab Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, Delhi Capitals, and Royal Challengers Bangalore. It’s also possible that KKR could exercise their Right to Match (RTM) card if he re-enters the IPL auction pool.

Shreyas Iyer’s aspirations for a higher contract price are reportedly a primary factor in KKR’s decision to release him. In addition to the financial aspect, factors like fitness issues and inconsistent recent performances have led to discussions within the KKR management about whether retaining Iyer is the best strategic move.

Further complicating Iyer’s retention are the broader team-building considerations KKR faces. The IPL’s competitive landscape emphasizes the need for a balance between star players and emerging talent, and KKR’s management may be looking to allocate resources toward building a versatile, well-rounded squad for the upcoming seasons.

Should Shreyas Iyer officially enter the auction pool, several franchises might consider him as a viable captaincy option. Teams like Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants have been exploring experienced leadership options to enhance their squads. Meanwhile, his former team, Delhi Capitals, and Royal Challengers Bangalore could also potentially benefit from his experience.

While KKR may release Shreyas Iyer from their retained list, the team has the option to use their Right to Match (RTM) card to bring him back during the auction. The RTM card would allow KKR to match the highest bid for Iyer, retaining him at a value dictated by the auction rather than through a direct contract renewal.

Since his acquisition in 2022, Shreyas Iyer has made significant contributions to KKR, both as a player and a captain. Leading the team in two IPL seasons, Iyer showcased his tactical skills and batting prowess. Yet, despite his impressive record, the considerations surrounding his retention emphasize the financial and strategic complexities of modern IPL team management.

As KKR’s final retention list is set to be submitted soon, Shreyas Iyer’s fate in the franchise will soon be decided. Whether he re-enters the auction pool or KKR uses the RTM card to retain him, Iyer’s journey in IPL 2025 is sure to be closely watched by fans and franchises alike. With potential suitors showing interest, the upcoming auction could see fierce bidding for this experienced and tactically astute player.
