Bengaluru: Rishabh Pant overcame a knee injury to score a crucial half-century on Day 4 of the first Test between India and New Zealand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Despite visible discomfort, Pant’s innings helped India stay in the contest as they chase down New Zealand’s commanding first-innings lead.
Pant, who had missed Day 3 due to swelling in his knee, walked out to bat on the morning of Day 4 with his knee heavily strapped. The injury was sustained on Day 2 when a ball struck his right knee, the same one that had undergone surgery following a car accident last year. Despite these concerns, Pant chose to bat, showing his trademark aggressive intent.
Initially cautious, Pant soon found his rhythm and raced to his 12th Test fifty off just 55 balls, hitting four boundaries and three sixes. He shared a vital century partnership with Sarfaraz Khan, helping India cross 300 in their second innings after a poor showing in the first, where they were bowled out for just 46 runs.
Pant’s fifty brought him level with Farokh Engineer in terms of most fifty-plus scores by an Indian wicketkeeper, trailing only MS Dhoni’s record. His innings was particularly significant as India faced a 356-run deficit from New Zealand’s first innings, which featured a century by Rachin Ravindra.
Though India remains behind in the match, Pant’s gritty performance has kept them in contention. Rain halted play in the morning session, but his contribution gave India a fighting chance as the Test heads into a crucial final phase.
