Just after the lunch break, India were 5 down for just 98 but Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja stitched a 222 run partnership to help India end on a high.
India were asked to bat first, after Jasprit Bumrah lost the toss on his captaincy debut.
The first session went slightly in favor of the home team, after James Anderson got rid of Shubman Gill for 17 and Cheteshwar Pujara for 13.
Rain stopped player after India managed to score 53/2 in 20.1 overs.
India lost 3 quick wickets and were left reeling on 98/5 but, Pant and Jadeja had different ideas.
Pant went on to score a brisk century, smashing the bowlers all over the park. He ended up getting to 3 figures in just 89 balls!
A counter-attacking innings that put England on the backfoot.
He did not stop after getting to the landmark. But, he played one shot too many, as he was dismissed for 146(111) by former England skipper Joe Root.
Nevertheless, Pant’s innings had put India in charge on Day 1. He was ably supported by Ravindra Jadeja, who ended up unbeaten on 83(163). India ended Day 1 with 338 runs on the board and 3 wickets in hand.
James Anderson was the pick of the bowlers yet again, picking up 3 crucial wickets for just 52 runs in his 19 overs.
Pant’s magnificent innings has earned himself a lot of plaudits.
Today’s events have put the test match in balance, with India needing to avoid a defeat to clinch the series. Currently, they lead England 2-1, following their memorable wins at Lord’s and The Oval.
