R Praggnanandhaa of India stuns Magnus Carlsen at the Airthings Masters chess competition.
In the eighth round of Airthings Masters, an online fast chess competition, 16-year-old Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa defeated World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen for the first time in any style of chess.
In a Tarrasch variation game, Praggnanandhaa won with black pieces in just 19 moves, ending Carlsen’s three-match winning streak at the Airthings Masters.
With eight points after eight rounds, the Indian GM is tied for 12th place. His stunning triumph over Carlsen follows a mediocre performance in the earlier rounds, which comprised a single victory over Lev Aronian, two draws, and four losses.
As reported by Chess24, when asked what he would do to celebrate his unexpected victory over Carlsen, Praggnanandhaa answered, “I guess it’s about just going to bed.”
His opponents were Eric Hansen, Ding Liren, Jan-Kryzstof Duda, and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. He drew with Anish Giri and Quang Liem Le and lost against Eric Hansen, Ding Liren, Jan-Kryzstof Duda, and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov.
Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia, who lost the world championship match against Carlsen of Norway a few months ago, leads the rankings with 19 points, followed by Ding Liren and Hansen (both on 15 points).
In the preliminary rounds of the Airthings Masters, a 16-person online quick competition, a player receives three points for a victory and one point for a tie. There are seven more rounds in the preliminary round.
