Joe Root, England’s premier batting star, shattered multiple Test cricket records during his brilliant knock in the ongoing first Test against Pakistan in Multan. Root scored his sixth double-century in Test cricket, breaking a tie with Alastair Cook, who has five double-tons, making Root the Englishman with the second-most double-centuries in Tests.
Root, who came to the crease late on Day 2 and remained unbeaten on 32, made history on Day 3 when he reached his 35th Test century. His century powered England past 100 runs alongside Zak Crawley, who contributed 78. Though Crawley was dismissed in the 25th over, Root kept his momentum, reaching his hundred off 167 balls after lunch. He then forged a 136-run partnership with Ben Duckett (84) and followed it up with a double-century stand alongside Harry Brook, who also reached a century.
Root’s achievements didn’t stop at his double ton. He surpassed Alastair Cook’s record of 12,472 runs to become England’s highest run-scorer in Test cricket. This accomplishment places Root among the top five run-scorers in Test history, with only Sachin Tendulkar (15,921), Ricky Ponting (13,378), Jacques Kallis (13,289), and Rahul Dravid (13,288) ahead of him.
Additionally, Root has now equaled Dravid’s record of scoring 50 or more runs in a Test match 99 times, putting him joint third on the all-time list of players with the most 50+ scores in Test cricket. Only Tendulkar (119), Kallis (103), and Ponting (103) have done this more often, further solidifying Root’s status as one of Test cricket’s most consistent performers.
