Tilak Varma Replaces Injured Shivam Dube for Bangladesh T20 Series
Indian womens boxers eased their way into the quarter-finals
2022 marks the 20th year of the IBA Women’s World Championship, held in Istanbul. The competition will be played till May 20. Indian boxers in total have won 36 medals, which is after second-placed nation China (50 medals) and Russia (60 medals). In the last edition of this event, which was held in Russia in 2019, India won one silver and three bronze medals.
Indian boxers Nikhat Zareen (52kg), Parveen (63kg), Anamika (50kg), and Jaismine (60kg) won their respective games to make it to the quarter-finals.
Nikhat Zareen appeared first on the court against Mongolian rival Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg in the 52kg category. Nikhat defeated the Mongolian by a unanimous 5-0 verdict to make way into the semis. The Nizamabad boxer is very agile with quick footwork and speed and won the match with quite an ease. She will face England’s Charley Davison in the quarters.
The third Indian to appear in the court, Parveen (63kg) used her strategy game to wait and attack. For the entire 9 minutes, she used her long reach to good effect and landed punches from distance. The American, her opponent couldn’t do much to break the flow and Parveen tactically played the whole match with patience and won the bout 5-0 by unanimous decision. Parveen will face Shoira Zulkaynarova of Tajikistan in the quarter-final.
But the main highlight of the day was the third match. Anamika (50kg) used her short height with good effects. Everyone may have thought her short height may create some problems for her but her fast footwork along with quick hands proved too much for the Australian to handle. She won the bout with great confidence and will next face Rio Olympics bronze medallist Ingrit Valencia in the quarters.
In the last match, Jaismine (60kg) stepped in the ring against Angela Harries of Australia. Jaismine also landed perfect punches at her opponent and resulting in the referee stopping the bout in the first round only. She will face the 2019 championships bronze medallist Rashida Ellis in the last-8 stage.
All the boxers will have their quarter-finals matches on Monday, 16th May, 2022.
