India vs Bangladesh 2nd Test : Top moments from Day 1
India vs Bangladesh 2nd Test : KL Rahul and company dominated the first day of the second Test between Bangladesh and India at the Shere Bangla Stadium, helping the bowlers keep the Bangla Tigers to 227 in 73.5 overs.
Jaydev Unadkat, who was making his long-awaited comeback to Test cricket with Team India after a 12-year absence, was the day’s primary newsmaker. Mominul Haque (84) was Bangladesh’s best batsman, with Unadkat taking two wickets.
India was 19/0 after eight overs of play on Day 1 at stumps, 208 runs behind the hosts. KL Rahul (3) and Shubman Gill (14) were in the middle.
Now let’s look at some of the highlights from the first day of the second Test:
Jaydev Unadkat takes 2 wickets upon his comeback:
Jaydev Unadkat last participated in a Test in December 2010 against South Africa. Rahul Dravid was a member of the Indian squad, which was led by MS Dhoni. Oh, and Virat Kohli had not yet played in a Test match.
Unadkat was chosen for the team to replace the injured Mohammed Shami, and to many people’s surprise, on Thursday, he was appointed to the playing XI for the second Test, replacing Kuldeep Yadav.
Unadkat first struck in the 15th over of the Bangladesh innings, when he got rid of Zakir Hasan (15), who was caught by KL Rahul at the slip position. The 31-year-old once again caused damage several overs later, in the 42nd over, when Mushfiqur Rahim was edged and caught by Rishabh Pant, courtesy Unadkat bowling that delivery at a length.
Unadkat would go on to finish the innings with figures of 2/50.
KL Rahul defeats the LBW decision:
KL Rahul was struck on the pad by Shakib Al Hasan’s ball in the eighth over of India’s first innings reply, and the on-field umpire declared him out for LBW. Rahul then had a brief conversation with Shubman Gill on the other end before deciding to use the DRS. Replays revealed there was no bat present. Rahul attempted to defend it straight as the ball had pitched around a length.
The ball was missing leg-stump, yet the impact was on target, hence the outcome was changed in India’s favour.
India would not have wanted to lose a critical wicket before the end of play, therefore Rahul and Team India were relieved when the judgement was reversed.
The significant 84 of Mominul Haque :
Mominul Haque stood out among the other Bangladeshi hitters, although the most of them did not play up to the standards that the team management would have set.
Many of them received starts but failed to turn them into significant knocks, notably Najmul Hossain Shanto (24), Litton Das (25), and Mushfiqur Rahim (26).
Mominul, though, was an exception to that rule. After Zakir Hasan was dismissed in the 15th over, Mominul entered the batting order at number three. He steadily put up 40-plus stand partnerships with Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur, Litton Das, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz that enabled Bangladesh to score 227.
It’s fair to say that Mominul’s patient 84, which was made in 157 balls and included 12 fours and one six, saved the hosts’ innings, which would have otherwise fallen to a total of less than 227.
Bangladesh’s downfall :
It is crucial that the batter from the other end give tremendous assistance since relying too much on one batter to accomplish everything might lead to a collapse. As was previously said, most of the home team’s hitters lacked drive and were unable to tally significant runs.
Speaking of which, Bangladesh was once 213/5, but they had no idea that they would be all out for 227.
Between the 67th and 73rd overs, Umesh Yadav, who had previously dismissed Shakib Al Hasan earlier in the innings, struck three times.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz attempted a cut shot in the 67th over but was caught by Pant after getting an outside edge off an Umesh delivery of length.
Yadav’s second victim was Nurul Hasan, who was hit leg before wicket in the 69th over. Bangladesh were 219/7 at this point, and a total of more over 300 seemed improbable.
The subsequent dismissal of Taskin Ahmed, who was caught by Siraj at point, gave Umesh Yadav a four-wicket haul.
In the next over, Ashwin, who had already claimed two wickets, joined the fray in the 74th over, dismissing both Khaled Ahmed and the in-form Mominul to end the Bangladesh innings. With four wickets each, Umesh and Ashwin completed the game.
Let’s see what’s up for the day 2, stay tuned!!
