The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) on Wednesday informed the Delhi High Court that athlete Tejaswin Shankar’s name has been included in the list of players to participate in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Justice Yashwant Verma directed the AFI to send Shankar’s name to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) .
AFI’s counsel informed the bench that as a vacancy has arisen due to disqualification of a player, Shankar’s name will now be forwarded in his place. The Commonwealth Games (CWG) are to be held in Birmingham from 28 July to 8 August.
The bench said that the petition will be kept pending for investigation in the matter and the next hearing on it will be on August 25.
Senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, appearing for the petitioner, submitted that since the team left for the event on Thursday, all necessary formalities regarding induction of the petitioner should be completed.
Hearing Shankar’s petition, on the last date, the bench had directed the selection committee to consider Shankar’s name.
Shankar had filed a petition seeking a direction to the AFI not to disqualify him from participating in the Commonwealth Games-2022 on the ground of non-appearance at the Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships. Shankar had argued that his name was excluded despite being the national high jump record holder (2.29 m).
