India’s Semi-Final Hopes Revived After Australia’s Win Over New Zealand
Gambhir wants the search for the next Kapil Dev to end.
For a long time, India has been trying to find an all-rounder who can perform consistently in both departments of the game. Team India is looking for a better all-rounder in limited-overs cricket.
While Hardik Pandya seemed to have solved the problem, his injury issues over the last three years meant that the Indian team was back where they started. In the past, many options, like Shivam Dube and Vijay Shankar, have been tried, but none have been successful in securing their spot in the team. Venkatesh Iyer was the latest to take on the responsibility but failed to impress in the recently concluded ODI series against South Africa.
Venkatesh Iyer scored 24 runs from two games, and he didn’t bowl a single over in the first ODI game and failed to take a wicket in the second game While he was dropped for the final game against South Africa.
Sunil Gavaskar, one of Team India’s great opening batsmen, has also mentioned a lack of all-rounders as a reason for the team’s poor performance.
Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has urged them to move forward in their search for a fast-bowling all-rounder. “If you don’t have something, don’t go for it. You have to accept and move on. Don’t try and create something which you can’t create, that is where the problem lies,” said Gambhir on Sports Today.
Gautam Gambhir said ‘After Kapil Dev, we always complain about a lack of all-rounders. Let’s move on to the Ranji Trophy where we can develop players, and when they are ready, let’s put them into international cricket and help them develop. Avoid changing them too often.
