Ashwin Overtakes Lyon to Rank 7 in All-Time Test Wicket-Takers

Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin etched his name in the history books, surpassing Australia’s Nathan Lyon to become the seventh-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket. Playing in his 104th Test during the second Test against New Zealand at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, the 38-year-old picked up three vital wickets to reach the milestone.

Ashwin began the day needing three wickets to surpass Lyon’s tally of 530. He achieved this in style, starting with the dismissal of New Zealand skipper Tom Latham for 15 in his first over. Ashwin’s second wicket came with Will Young’s scalp (18), as wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant took a sharp catch. Ashwin completed his trio of dismissals by sending Devon Conway, who played a solid 76-run innings, back to the pavilion. With these wickets, Ashwin now has 531 Test wickets, moving him ahead of Lyon’s 530 and placing him seventh on the all-time list of Test wicket-takers.

The top of this illustrious list features Muttiah Muralitharan with 800 wickets, followed by Shane Warne (708), James Anderson (704), Anil Kumble (619), Stuart Broad (604), and Glenn McGrath (563).

Ashwin also broke another record in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC), becoming the highest wicket-taker in the competition’s history with 189 wickets, surpassing Lyon’s 187. His consistent performances in WTC and Test cricket, particularly on home soil, have further established his legacy.

Now, with 531 Test wickets to his name, Ashwin has set his sights on surpassing even more milestones. He could soon surpass Shane Warne’s 37 five-wicket hauls if he claims two more wickets in this innings, marking his 38th career five-for.
