England’s Record-Breaking Test Win: The Multan Miracle Against Pakistan
Ashleigh Barty wins the Australian Open 2022.
Ashleigh Barty beats American Danielle Collins 6-3, 7-6 on Saturday. Ashleigh Barty became the first Australian to win home Grand Slam in 44 years since Chris O Neil won the women’s title in 1978.
This was the 25-year-old’s third Slam title after her breakthrough success at the French Open in 2019 and at Wimbledon last year. She becomes only the second active player after Serena Williams to win majors at all three surfaces.
During their early service games, both players comfortably held their positions, offering few opportunities as they got to know each other. But Collins started to attack powerful strokes and was causing trouble.
Barty was serving at 2-2 when she earned the first break point of the night with a wayward forehand.
Having earned her first break point with a net volley, she stepped up a gear and pressed Collins to earn her second break point. Collins’s double faulted under pressure to lose 4-2.
Despite being down by 1-5 in the second set, Barty eventually won the match. After dropping serve twice in the second set, she lost the second set 5-1 despite winning the first set with one service break. The second set was close to being a tie, but Collins was broken twice.
O’Neil was in the stands when the floodlit Rod Laver Arena erupted with cheers when Barty converted her first match point. As the set went to a tiebreaker, Barty dominated, winning 4-0.
