US Open 2022: 18-year-old Coco Gauff enters US Open quarterfinals for the first time
18-year-old Coco Gauff of America defeated Zhang Shuai of China 7-5, 7-5 to enter the quarterfinals of the US Open for the first time. French Open runner-up Coco Gauff became the youngest player to reach the US Open last eight, behind Melanie Odin. Odin reached here in 2009 at the age of 17. Coco Gauff will now face 17th-ranked Caroline Garcia of France.
Garcia defeated 29th-ranked Alison Riske Amritraj 6-4, 6-1. Ajla Tomjanovic, who defeated Serena Williams in the third round, will face either fifth-ranked Ons Jabour or 18th-ranked Veronika Kudermetova.
In men’s singles, 23rd seed Nick Kyrgios defeated defending champion and world number one Daniil Medvedev 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Kyrgios will now face 27th seed Karen Khachanov, while French Open runner-up Casper Roode will face Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berettini in the second quarter-finals.
After the US Open, Medvedev’s top ranking will also go away. Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcarez or Ruud will take his place.
