Top 5 controversies in the IPL history
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is going in its 15th year of play and one can say that the domestic cricket tournament has been nothing less of a hit in the country. Players and coaches from all parts of the world have come here and enjoyed the experience of playing some exciting T20 cricket over the years since 2008. However, it hasn’t been a smooth sailing ride for the league in all these years. There have been some incidents that did not help the image and the standards of India’s elite domestic cricket league.
Here are the top 5 controversies in the Indian Premier League’s history:
5. Shahrukh Khan banned from the Wankhede Stadium

This incident takes us back to the 2012 edition of the IPL when the Kolkata Knight Rider’s co-owner and famous Bollywood celebrity Shahrukh Khan got into an altercation with the Wankhede Stadium’s security personnel. According to the Bollywood star, the fight had started because of the security personnel misbehaving with his kids and friends whereas the security stated that Shahrukh had gotten into a drunken brawl and crossed the limits. Due to this altercation, the Mumbai Cricket Association banned Shahrukh for five years.
4. The players ‘Rave Party’
This incident also took place in 2012 when two players from the former IPL franchise Pune Warriors India Rahul Sharma and Wayne Parnell, got caught in a controversial situation when they both were found in a ‘Rave party’ by the Mumbai Police. They both were arrested along with 90 other people which also consisted of famous celebrities. Even after both, the players denied all the accusations of using any illegal substance, the Mumbai Police confirmed that both the players had tested positive for the usage of recreational drugs.
3. The Lalit Modi controversy
Lalit Modi is the man who came up with the idea of the Indian Premier League and had created a big name for himself because of this tournament as well. However, he was removed from the post of IPL chairman in 2010 for charges against him on financial misgovernance and corruption. He used to give all the tenders and contracts to his family and friends as well due to which he was banned for life in 2013 by the BCCI.
2. The Harbhajan-Sreesanth Slap controversy

The inaugural season of the Indian Premier League was a revelation for the Indian cricket lovers itself but incidents like these, made the drama lovers also dive into the sport. The match between the Mumbai Indians and the Kings XI Punjab saw Harbhajan Singh slap Sreesanth on the cricket field in front of thousands of fans which eventually led to Sreesanth crying on the field in front of the fans and on live TV. The real cause of the incident still hasn’t been found out
1. The ‘Spot fixing’ scandal
The spot-fixing scandal was one of the biggest and most shameful controversies in the Indian Premier League so far as it raised a finger on the credibility of the country’s league. Delhi police had charged three players – S.Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila, and Ankeet Chavan for spot-fixing and were arrested for the allegation as well. However, the three of them were not found guilty by the court. Ajit Chandila was banned from playing any form of the sport by the BCCI in 2016.
It was also later discovered that Gurunath Meiyappan who was the owner of CSK and the son-in-law of the BCCI president N Srinivasan was in contact with the bookies. Because of his involvement, both the Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals owners got suspended and the teams were banned from the IPL for two seasons by the RM Lodha Committee.
