Sourav Ganguly, President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has spoken out about the possibility of launching a women’s Indian Premier League, stating that 2023 will be a very good time to launch a full-fledged women’s league that will be as big and grand a success as the men’s IPL.
Notably, the BCCI has been arranging the Women’s T20 Challenge, in which three teams competed in the T20 tournament. The Women’s T20 Challenge did not take place in 2021, despite the BCCI hosting the IPL in two halves because to the Covid-19 epidemic. Many Indian women cricketers, including Jemimah Rodrigues and Smriti Mandhana, have advocated for the establishment of a women’s IPL.
Notably, Cricket Australia hosts a Women’s Big Bash League, while the England and Wales Cricket Board hosted the Women’s Hundred alongside the men’s competition during the inaugural edition earlier this year. As many as eight Indian women’s cricket players will compete in the Big Bash League in Australia in 2021.
The Women’s T20 Challenge will also take place during the IPL 2022 playoffs in May, according to Ganguly. The dates and locations will be determined later.
“The Women’s T20 Challenge will return this year in the month of May.” We hope to be able to stage a larger women’s IPL in the future as the number of female players increases. However, the Women’s T20 Challenge will take place during the IPL playoffs this year,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by Sportstar. Michael Vaughan, the former England captain, has urged the BCCI chief to start a women’s Indian Premier League as soon as possible. “A Womens #IPL should be top priority now @SGanguly99!! Let’s get it sorted …,” Vaughan tweeted
