Bindiyarani Devi became the fourth Indian weightlifter to win a medal on the second day of the Commonwealth Games. The 23-year-old weightlifter from Manipur won a silver medal in the women’s 55kg category. He lifted 116 kg in clean and jerk to set a Commonwealth Games record with a total weight of 202 kg. Bindiyarani trains at the same academy in Manipur, from where Mirabai Chanu had hoisted the flag at the Tokyo Olympics. She considers Mirabai as her idol. Born in 1999, Bindiyarani made her mark in the world of weightlifting by winning a gold medal in the clean and jerk of the 55 kg weight class at the World Championships in December 2021.
