Super over could decide the IPL final winner in case of rain

IPL Final: In case the Gods of rain decide to play spoil sport, the title winner would come down to a super over.

There is a very less chance that rain disrupts play on 2 consecutive days but, if it does, BCCI are ready for it. It will all come down to a super over battle.

Currently, there are less chances of rain disrupting play, but let’s say it rains today after the toss and we are not able to commence.

What steps does BCCI have to tackle this?

First safety step – There is a reserve day on 30th of May, in case the match is washed out 29th May.

If some play has happened, or even a ball is bowled before play is washed out, the match on 30th May will start from the exact same scoreline.

Exactly the same period of time that is allotted to complete a final .i.e. 5 hours 20 mins, will be allotted to the teams on 30th May as well.

This excludes a 2 hour period, which is used as a safety cushion.

After this, overs will start to be reduced, in order to have at least a 5 over batting opportunity for both teams.

The latest time for the ground to be ready for the IPL Final is 1:20 am. This means that for a super over battle to be conducted, the pitch and the ground needs to be ready by 1:20 am latest.

This is the most unlikeliest of scenarios but, BCCI and IPL are ready for each and every delay.

If the Super over does not happen, the winner would be decided on the basis of the league table. This means Gujarat Titans will be crowned champions, if the tie cannot be decided by playing the match.

But these are all ifs and buts that we do not need to worry about.

As of now, the closing ceremony has started with Bollywood Super stars engaging the 1.32L people gathered at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
