Sunil Gavaskar said that Rohit Sharma made a great debut as a test captain

Sunil Gavaskar, who played for the Indian national cricket team from 1982-96, is pleased with Rohit Sharma’s performance as a captain during the first of two Tests against Sri Lanka in Mohali, claiming the new skipper got his field placements and bowling changes right.

In his first game as India’s captain, Rohit Sharma led his team to victory with two days to spare against Sri Lanka.

India declared 574/8 in the first innings and then bowled the Lankan team for 174 and 178. In the two-match test series, they took a 1-0 lead. Rohit made numerous bold moves, like resting Jasprit Bumrah in the second innings and relying on Jayant Yadav as Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin ripped through the Sri Lankan attack.

As captain, you made a great debut. Winning in three days shows that you have a good squad. More importantly, the bowling changes proved to be spectacular.

In my opinion, this was an outstanding debut. It is apparent that you have a superior squad when you win in three days. However, when India was fielding, the bowling changes were spectacular, and catches were landing right where the fielders were. The catches were falling just in front of the fielders. What does this imply? Sunil Gavaskar explained to Star Sports, “Position on the field.”

Even with the bowling changes, you could argue that Ravindra Jadeja was brought on a bit later in the first innings, but at the end of the day, the team had won with two days to spare.

My rating for him is 9.5 out of 10.
