Sports Trumpet Pays tribute to Indian female athletes
In this century of women’s empowerment, it’s difficult to ignore the advancement of women in all aspects of life. Because they were denied the opportunity and space to speak for themselves, women have come out in several ways.
Women in sports were unusual in India even a century ago. However, in the latter decades of the previous century, things began to alter. There has been a continuous and dramatic transition since the turn of the century, with more women excelling in sports for the country.
Let us look at some of the women who have made India proud in the world of sports.
- Mithali Raj: – Mithali Raj is the current captain of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team. Mithali, a right-handed middle-order batsman, was born on December 3, 1982. Aside from it, she currently has several other titles. Mithali Raj is the leading run scorer in women’s international cricket and the only woman to score over 7,000 runs in one-day internationals.
- PV Sindhu: – Pusarla Venkata Sindhu is a badminton superstar in India who has contributed to put the country on the map around the world. Sindhu, who was born on July 5, 1995, is the most successful badminton player in India. Sindhu entered the BWF World Rankings in the Top 20 at the age of 17 in 2012. She is just the second woman to win five BWF World Championships medals, following Zhang Ning of China. With a silver medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics, she became the first Indian badminton player to reach the Olympic finals. She’s also a Commonwealth Games silver medalist and an Asian Games silver medalist.
- Mary Kom: – Mangte Chungnejiang Mary Kom’s accomplishments aren’t limited to the sporting world. She is a boxer, politician, and Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament who was born on November 24, 1982. Mary Kom has the record for being the only woman to win the World Amateur Boxing Championship six times. She is also the first boxer to win eight World Championship medals (male or female). In 2012, she became the first Indian female boxer to qualify for the flyweight class, winning a bronze medal. Mary Kom has also been declared the female light flyweight champion of the International Boxing Association. Mary Kom became the first Indian female boxer to win gold medals in both the Asian and Commonwealth Games. She’s also a six-time winner of the Asian Amateur Boxing Championship.
- Avani Lekhara: – Avani Lekhara was born on November 8, 2001 and is an Indian Paralympian and rifle shooter. At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, Avani Lekhara won a gold medal in 10m air rifle standing and a bronze medal in 50m rifle standing. With SH1, she is now ranked second in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle rankings. Avani holds the title to become the first Indian woman to win multiple Paralympic medals at the same time.
- Mirabai Chanu: – Mirabai Chanu, often known as “Saikhom,” is an Indian weightlifter who has represented her nation on several times. She was born on August 8, 1994. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Mirabai Chanu earned a silver medal in the women’s 49 kg class. She has won World Championships and Commonwealth Games medals on several occasions.
