Shubman Gill Reflects on Gabba Nostalgia as India Gears Up for 3rd Test vs Australia

With the series level at 1-1, Team India is gearing up for what Shubman Gill describes as a “three-match Test series” ahead of the crucial third Test at the Gabba. Reflecting on the iconic venue where his remarkable 91 runs helped India secure a historic victory during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Gill expressed a sense of nostalgia.

“Walking into the stadium brought back so many memories,” said Gill. “The whole team felt nostalgic about our win in 2021. While we didn’t perform well in Adelaide, the series is tied, and we’re treating it like a three-match Test series. If we win this one, we gain an advantage heading into Melbourne and Sydney.”

Gill also confirmed that skipper Rohit Sharma skipped the practice session since it was optional. This, however, hasn’t deterred India’s preparations for what is expected to be an intense encounter.

Discussing the unique challenges of Test cricket in Australia, Gill emphasized the difficulty of sustaining intensity over five days. “The mental intensity and fitness required here are unlike anywhere else, especially at venues like the Gabba,” he explained. “Maintaining that energy throughout five days is what makes this tour so tough.”

Gill also opened up about the difficulties of adapting to pink-ball cricket under lights, particularly in the first innings at Adelaide. “Picking up the seam from the bowler’s hand is tougher with the pink ball, especially at night,” he said. “It’s quite different from playing with the red ball during the day. My downfall came when I wasn’t on strike for a while. After facing very few balls, I missed a fuller delivery entirely. Such challenges are common in pink-ball games.”

India’s approach will heavily rely on adapting to the high-intensity Test environment in Australia. With players like Gill reflecting on past mistakes and preparing for the dynamics of Australian pitches, the team is focused on turning the tide in their favor.

This third Test at the Gabba promises to be a thrilling encounter as both teams aim to take the lead in this fiercely contested series.
