Shehbaz Sharif Backs PCB Amid Champions Trophy 2025 Hosting Dispute

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has assured full support to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi regarding the hosting of the Champions Trophy 2025. Sharif emphasized that Pakistan must prioritize its self-respect and the sentiments of its people while addressing the issue. He underlined that the matter is not solely about financial considerations but also about national pride.

India has refused to play its Champions Trophy matches in Pakistan, demanding instead a hybrid model where its games would take place at a neutral venue, such as Dubai. Sources suggest the International Cricket Council (ICC) has reached a consensus to adopt this hybrid approach, not only for the Champions Trophy but potentially for other multi-nation events through 2027.

Naqvi recently briefed Sharif on the developments surrounding the hosting dispute, although the PCB has kept details of the meeting private. According to insiders, Sharif appreciated the PCB’s firm stance and stressed that their approach reflects the aspirations of the Pakistani public. He added that any decisions should align with government policy and national pride.

The PCB, under Naqvi’s leadership, has been advocating for a “fusion formula” to the ICC, proposing that if India refuses to play in Pakistan, Pakistani teams should also abstain from playing in India during ICC events. While the BCCI has reportedly not agreed to this proposal, discussions are ongoing at ICC headquarters in Dubai.

Sharif assured Naqvi of his unwavering backing and encouraged the PCB to stand firm. A government insider revealed that Naqvi sought the Prime Minister’s approval to navigate potential tough decisions as the deadlock continues.

This situation has sparked widespread debate about the future of bilateral and multi-nation cricket events and the broader implications for relations between the cricket boards of the two neighboring countries.
