Sanath Jayasuriya Takes the Helm as Sri Lanka’s Head Coach Until 2026 T20 World Cup

In an exciting development for Sri Lankan cricket, legendary opener Sanath Jayasuriya has been appointed as the full-time head coach of the national team. This decision comes after a successful two-and-a-half-month stint as interim coach, where Jayasuriya demonstrated his capability to revive the team’s fortunes both at home and during tours. His full-time contract will run until the end of the 2026 T20 World Cup, which is set to be hosted in India and Sri Lanka.

Sanath Jayasuriya stepped into the role of interim coach in July 2024, following Chris Silverwood’s resignation after the team’s disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup held in the USA and West Indies. Under Jayasuriya’s leadership, Sri Lanka showcased a remarkable turnaround, starting with their first bilateral ODI series win over India in 27 years. The series ended with Sri Lanka triumphing 2-0, a feat that marked a significant moment in the nation’s cricketing history.

In his brief tenure, Jayasuriya also led the team to a historic win against England at The Oval, securing only their fourth Test victory in England and their first since 2014. More recently, Sri Lanka continued their success by sweeping New Zealand 2-0 in a Test series at home. Jayasuryia’s first assignment as head coach will be the home series against West Indies, starting on October 13, where the team will compete in three T20Is and an equal number of ODIs. SLC’s executive committee made this decision based on the team’s impressive performances in recent series, believing Jayasuriya’s guidance can continue to elevate the team’s game.

With a celebrated career as a player, Jayasuriya was instrumental in Sri Lanka’s victory in the 1996 Cricket World Cup.
