Ruturaj Gaikwad Slams Controversial Dismissal in Ranji Trophy
Maharashtra’s star batter, Ruturaj Gaikwad, has expressed his frustration over a controversial dismissal during his team’s ongoing Ranji Trophy match against Services. Despite being in Australia leading the India A team, Gaikwad did not hold back from criticizing the decision, which involved his teammate and Maharashtra’s stand-in captain, Ankit Bawne.
The incident occurred during the Maharashtra vs Services match in Pune when Bawne was adjudged caught behind off a delivery that replays clearly showed had bounced before reaching the second slip fielder. Despite the clear evidence, Bawne was given out, leaving Gaikwad visibly outraged.
Taking to social media, Gaikwad shared a slow-motion video of the incident, questioning how such a decision could be given in a live match. In his Instagram post, Gaikwad wrote, “How can this be given out in a live game???” and added, “Shame to even appeal for a catch! Absolutely pathetic.”
The controversial dismissal has sparked a wider conversation about umpiring standards in domestic cricket. The use of technology such as the Decision Review System (DRS) has been instrumental in reducing umpiring errors at the international level. However, domestic matches, including those in the Ranji Trophy, often do not have access to such technology, leaving players at the mercy of on-field umpires, who may not always have the best view of the action.
This has led to growing frustration among players, with Gaikwad’s outburst echoing a broader sentiment of dissatisfaction with umpiring in the domestic circuit. The slow-motion replay clearly showed that the ball had bounced before reaching the fielder’s hands, further fueling the controversy.
Gaikwad’s post drew attention to the importance of fair and accurate decision-making in cricket, especially at the domestic level. As players increasingly share their frustrations online, the calls for better officiating standards and access to technological aids in domestic cricket are growing louder.
While the Maharashtra-Services clash has been one of the few Ranji Trophy matches being telecasted live, the incident added to the already heated debate about the fairness of umpiring in domestic cricket. The decision left Bawne visibly upset, but he continued his fight at the crease, scoring a gritty 73 runs.
Gaikwad, who has been one of Maharashtra’s standout players in the Ranji Trophy this season, has also faced challenges on the international front. He was recently excluded from India’s squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with Bengal’s Abhimanyu Easwaran taking his place. Gaikwad’s omission from the T20I series against South Africa also raised eyebrows, further adding to the frustration among his supporters.
Despite these setbacks, Gaikwad remains focused on leading the India A team in Australia, where his performances have been under scrutiny. The ongoing debate over umpiring standards, however, has put a spotlight on the importance of technology in cricket, especially in high-stakes domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy.
As the controversy over Bawne’s dismissal continues to dominate discussions, Gaikwad’s outspoken comments underscore the need for reform in domestic officiating and the integration of technology to ensure the fairness and integrity of the game.
