Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devdutt Padikkal Likely Backups Amid Injury Woes
Injuries to key players have hit India’s preparations for the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024. Reports indicate that Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devdutt Padikkal, recently featured in the two unofficial Test matches for India A against Australia A, might stay in Australia as backup options for the senior Indian team.
Team India is grappling with injuries ahead of the five-match Test series. Star batter Shubman Gill reportedly injured his thumb, casting doubt over his availability for the series opener at Optus Stadium in Perth, starting November 22. In addition, KL Rahul suffered an injury on November 15, further complicating India’s selection challenges.
While Gaikwad didn’t significantly impact the unofficial Tests held in Mackay and Melbourne, he shone during an intra-squad match at the WACA Stadium in Perth. His innings featured four sixes, including two off R. Ashwin’s bowling, showcasing his ability to perform in challenging conditions.
Similarly, Karnataka batter Devdutt Padikkal, who made his Test debut in March 2024 and scored a solid 65 runs in his first innings, impressed during the first session of the same intra-squad match. He looked composed even against India’s ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah.
According to recent reports, the India A team under Ruturaj Gaikwad is still in Australia, and selectors are considering retaining some players as backups for the senior squad. If necessary, either Padikkal or Gaikwad could join the Indian team for the Test series.
In a boost for India, experienced pacer Mohammed Shami is set to travel to Australia alongside Rohit Sharma. Shami, who returned to competitive cricket after nearly a year, proved his fitness by bowling over 40 overs in a Ranji Trophy match for Bengal against Madhya Pradesh. He picked up an impressive seven wickets, helping Bengal secure a narrow 11-run victory.
While Devdutt Padikkal has one Test cap, Ruturaj Gaikwad is still awaiting his Test debut. Both players remain strong contenders for a call-up if injuries continue to trouble the Indian squad. With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy set to kick off soon, India will look to these emerging talents to step up and deliver if needed.
