Rohit Sharma Set to Miss Start of Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25
India captain Rohit Sharma is expected to lead the team on their upcoming tour of Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The highly anticipated five-match Test series against the reigning World Test Championship winners starts on November 22. However, India could face a significant challenge, as Rohit will likely miss the initial part of the tour due to personal reasons.
According to reports, the 37-year-old opener has already informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about his matter, which may cause him to miss either the first Test, the second, or possibly both at the start of the series. “There is no complete clarity yet, but Rohit has communicated to the BCCI that he might need to skip one or two Tests at the beginning of the tour due to personal reasons,” said a BCCI source.
Rohit could be featured in all five tests if the issue is resolved quickly. However, it has been confirmed in his absence that Abhimanyu Easwaran will be called up for the tour, stepping in as an opener alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. With Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli set to follow in the batting order, Easwaran’s inclusion will fill the void left by Rohit.
As for the leadership debate, Ace Pacer Jasprit Bumrah is a strong candidate to stand in as vice-captain during Rohit’s absence, although other potential options exist. Shubman Gill and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who have captained IPL franchises and shown leadership qualities, may also be in the mix for the captaincy role. Gill, in particular, has been named India’s vice-captain and has led the team previously.
