Rohit Sharma Hints at Shami’s Test Return in Australia

India captain Rohit Sharma has hinted at the possibility of Mohammed Shami joining the Test squad in Australia, but he emphasized the importance of prioritizing the pacer’s fitness before making a decision.

Following India’s crushing ten-wicket defeat in the second Test in Adelaide, Rohit addressed the media, stating, “The door is very much open for Shami, but we are closely monitoring his progress. While playing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he experienced swelling in his knee, which has affected his preparation for Test cricket. We don’t want to rush him back unless he’s completely ready.”

Sharma highlighted the cautious approach being taken with Shami, explaining, “We are consulting professionals who are monitoring his recovery and performance. They’ll decide based on how he performs after bowling spells and enduring long matches. We want to ensure he’s 100% fit before joining the squad.”

Shami has been out of action for India since the ODI World Cup final in November 2023. After undergoing ankle surgery in February and facing setbacks during rehabilitation, he finally made a comeback in domestic cricket. Shami impressed with seven wickets in a Ranji Trophy game for Bengal against Madhya Pradesh and further featured in seven Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy matches, claiming eight wickets in 27.3 overs.

While there hasn’t been an official confirmation about his inclusion in the Australia series, it’s anticipated that Shami will join the Test squad if his recovery remains on track.
