Ravindra Jadeja surpasses Kapil Dev’s record.
On Day 2 of the first Test of the two-match series in Mohali on Saturday, India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja smashed Kapil Dev’s record with an unbroken 175-run performance against Sri Lanka.
In India’s first innings against Sri Lanka, Jadeja scored a career-best 175 runs to remain undefeated. As a No. 7 batsman, Jadeja outperformed Kapil Dev in 1986, who made 163 against Sri Lanka.
As an Indian hitter, Jadeja is one of just three players who have scored 150 or more in Tests when batting at 7 or lower. During his first at-bat at No.7 or below, Jadeja became the first player to have three hundred partnerships in an inning.
Indian batters hitting number 7 or below have hit 175* as their highest score. On Day 1, he showed a great deal of maturity as he was a second fiddle to Rishabh Pant when that wicketkeeper batter took on the opposition bowlers. Together, they scored 104 runs.
In 2008, Shane Warne named the India star ‘Rockstar’ as a tribute to the late Australian legend, who died on Friday. Jadeja’s unbeaten 175-run knock was a fitting tribute to Warne, who happened to die on Friday. The first session belonged to Jadeja, who hit triple digits just before noon, regaling the modest audience assembled at the IS Bindra Stadium with his unique sword-play technique.
