PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth advance in the German Open
Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and former World Championship silver medallist Kidambi Srinath have managed to get the better of their first-round opponents in the German Open Super 300 badminton tournament at Muelheim An Der Ruhr (Germany) on Tuesday. Sindhu progressed to the second round in a dominating fashion as she beat Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan with a score of 21-8, 21-7. On the other side, Kidambi Srikanth managed to beat world number 39 Brice Leverdez 2-1 with the score of 21-10, 13-21, 21-7 in just 48 minutes.
PV Sindhu showcased her class in the tie against the World no.11 after she completed her 15th victory against her in a superior fashion. Having won the tournament in 2019, she will be hoping to add another title to her illustrious career as she will either take on Spain’s Beatriz Corrales or China’s Zhang Yi Man in the next round.
World number 11 Kidambi Srikanth on the other hand had to fight for his win as the score was tied 1-1 after two sets. As the deciding game started, Kidambi, fortunately, was able to find his rhythm back and claimed the victory by winning the last set 21-7 in an amazing manner. The 29-year-old will be facing China’s Lu Guang Zu in the next round.
However, it isn’t all good news for the Indian badminton contingent as the Indian mixed doubles team of Sai Pratheek K and N Sikki Reddy had to endure a disappointing finish to their campaign after they got beat by top seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand, losing 19-21, 8-21 in their opening fixture.
