Prithvi Shaw Responds After Mumbai Ranji Trophy Omission with a 4-Word Post
Mumbai’s star batter faces disciplinary actions as concerns about fitness and commitment lead to his exclusion from the squad.
Prithvi Shaw’s cricketing journey hit another rough patch as the Mumbai opener was left out of the squad for the upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Tripura. Shaw, who has faced challenges with form and discipline, shared a brief yet telling message on Instagram, seemingly addressing his omission: “Needed a break thanks.”
This move by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) follows reports that Shaw has been struggling with both his fitness and his commitment to regular training sessions. According to insiders, the 24-year-old has not been consistently attending net practice, and when he does, he is often dismissed cheaply. His physical fitness has also been under scrutiny, with reports suggesting that his body fat percentage has risen to 35%, far above the team’s expectations.
Shaw’s exclusion has sparked discussions, with many pointing out that seasoned players like Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, and Shardul Thakur have been diligent in their preparations. Shaw, however, has failed to meet these standards, leading Mumbai’s senior selection committee to leave him out of the squad.
Captain Ajinkya Rahane and coach Omkar Salvi were reportedly unhappy with Shaw’s lax attitude. Despite his immense talent—he became the youngest Indian to score a century on his Test debut—off-field issues have repeatedly hampered his career. Shaw has also faced criticism for missing earlier training camps and for his inconsistent performances in domestic matches.
The MCA has not provided an official reason for Shaw’s omission, but reports indicate that his lack of discipline and fitness concerns played a major role. The upcoming Ranji Trophy match, which will see Mumbai face off against Tripura from October 26, will proceed without one of its brightest talents, leaving fans and selectors wondering if Shaw can bounce back from this setback.
While Shaw has been a prominent figure in the Indian Premier League (IPL), representing the Delhi Capitals, his recent performances in the 2024 season led to him being dropped for several matches. His future with the franchise remains uncertain as the 2025 IPL auction approaches.
For now, all eyes remain on Shaw’s next move—whether he can return to form and prove his critics wrong, or if his off-field troubles will continue to overshadow his undeniable talent on the pitch.
