Polly Inglis Earns Maiden Call-Up as New Zealand Women Announce Squad for India ODIs
Wicketkeeper-batter Polly Inglis included in 15-member squad for India’s tour, crucial for World Cup preparation
New Zealand Women’s cricket team has announced their squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against India, marking an important milestone for Polly Inglis. The 28-year-old wicketkeeper-batter from Otago Sparks earned her first-ever call-up to the national side, following a string of impressive performances in domestic cricket. This series, set to begin on Thursday in Ahmedabad, is seen as vital preparation for the 2025 ODI World Cup, which will also be hosted in India.
Polly Inglis’ debut in the squad reflects her outstanding form, particularly in the Super Smash and New Zealand A matches. Her consistent showing with both the bat and the gloves earned her a central contract earlier this year. Head coach Ben Sawyer expressed his excitement about her inclusion, saying, “Polly has put her hand up during the domestic season, and we’re thrilled to see her take this next step in international cricket.”
The selection of Inglis is a nod to the team’s future, especially as they look to build on their recent success. The New Zealand women’s team recently lifted the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Dubai, and Inglis’ addition comes as they look to strengthen their squad for 50-over cricket.
Notably, the squad for India includes most of the players who secured the World Cup title, with only pace bowler Rosemary Mair and off-spinner Leigh Kasperek missing due to injury and rest. Lauren Down also returns to the squad after resuming international cricket following her maternity break.
This series holds significant importance for the team as they fine-tune their game ahead of the World Cup. “Touring India is one of the greatest experiences in world cricket,” Sawyer added. “This is not just about winning the series but also about building momentum and preparing for next year’s World Cup.”
The three-match series is set to kick off at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, with matches scheduled for October 24, 27, and 29. As New Zealand transitions from T20 to 50-over cricket, all eyes will be on the squad’s adaptability, with Polly Inglis’ debut adding an extra layer of intrigue to this already exciting series.
