Morocco vs Portugal, FIFA World Cup 2022 Quarterfinals
Morocco vs Portugal, FIFA World Cup 2022 Quarterfinals : A first-ever World Cup quarterfinal appearance—the first to be held in the Arab world, no less—and a matchup against Portugal and its star striker, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Maybe, then.
Because Ronaldo has once again been able to steal the show in his unmistakable fashion, even displacing Morocco’s historic run to the final eight from the top of the agenda before Saturday’s encounter that is loaded with backstory.
He hasn’t started, but will he soon? After Fernando Santos, the coach of Portugal, decided to bench Ronaldo for Tuesday’s 6-1 victory over Switzerland in the round of 16, it is the main question being raised regarding the star player. After learning about Ronaldo’s tantrum following his demand to the bench to be replaced, Santos made the change.
In addition to being benched, the five-time world player of the year’s replacement, 21-year-old Goncalo Ramos, scored a hat trick, which presented Santos with a difficult decision over his lineup versus Morocco.
When Morocco advanced from a group that included second-ranked Belgium and 2018 runner-up Croatia, fans flocked to the streets of European towns to celebrate the team’s advancement to the quarterfinals.
The country is also breaking new ground by becoming just the fourth African nation, behind Cameroon (1990), Senegal (2002), and Ghana, to get to the quarterfinals of soccer’s biggest competition (2010). Nobody of them advanced to the semifinals. The only other team from outside of Europe or South America to advance to the last eight in Qatar is Morocco.
However, it’s possible that three important players won’t feel well enough to play against Portugal. Romain Saiss, the team’s captain, finished the game with his leg bandaged after receiving treatment, and fellow centre back Nayef Aguerd hobbled off in tears with what appeared to be a thigh injury, according to Amrabat, who claimed to have played with a back injury that required painkilling injections.
Portugal doesn’t seem to have these issues; Santos’ outstanding squad depth allowed him to start players like Ronaldo, Joao Cancelo, and Ruben Neves against Switzerland while leaving them on the bench for the other games.
