Matthew Wade Retires from International Cricket

Matthew Wade, Australia’s accomplished wicketkeeper-batter, has officially retired from international cricket to transition into coaching, Cricket Australia confirmed on Tuesday. Debuting in 2011, Wade has had a versatile international career with 36 Tests, 97 ODIs, and 92 T20I appearances, his last being in June 2024 at the T20 World Cup.

Reflecting on his decision, Wade shared, “I was aware my international career was nearing its end after the last T20 World Cup. I’ve been in talks with George Bailey and Andrew McDonald about my future in coaching for the past six months, and it’s a path I’m truly excited about.”

Wade emphasized his gratitude for the opportunities he’s received, saying, “Coaching has been a goal for years, and I’m grateful for these new roles.” Though he’ll continue playing in the Big Bash League for Hobart Hurricanes and possibly other franchises, his focus will increasingly shift to his coaching journey. Wade also extended heartfelt thanks to his family, former teammates, coaches, and support staff, acknowledging their role in his career’s success.

Starting with the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan, Wade will join Australia’s coaching staff led by Andre Borovec. He will also support the team for the ODI series beginning next week in Melbourne. Wade will continue to play for Tasmania and in the BBL for at least two more seasons.

Cricket Australia’s CEO, Nick Hockley, commended Wade’s remarkable career: “Matthew’s skills and versatility made him a key performer across all formats. We’re thrilled he’ll now guide the next generation of Australian cricket talent.”

Ben Oliver, Cricket Australia’s Executive General Manager, High Performance & National Teams, also praised Wade’s contributions: “Matthew was a beloved teammate whose resilience and adaptability were invaluable. We’re excited to see him transition to coaching and wish him and his family the very best.”
