Manchester City announce the signing of Kalvin Phillips
Leeds United defensive midfielder, Kalvin Phillips has joined Manchester City on a 6 year deal.
Premier League winners of 2021/22, Manchester City, have added to their midfield depth after signing Kalvin Phillips. England’s POTY in 2020 joins City for £42m.
The Englishman has signed a deal that will keep him at the current English champions for 6 years. After a magnificent run in 2020, Phillips’ 21/22 season was marked with injury.
He featured in only 23 matches in all competitions, scoring 1 and assisting another in his time on the field. (Stats via Transfermarkt)
However, many back the 26 year old defensive midfielder to excel at Manchester City. With Fernandinho leaving at the end of the season, Phillips has been signed as a back-up to Rodri.
Both Phillips and Rodri are world class defensive midfielders and can gel well together too. This will give Pep some more defensive stability, in front of his defense.
Leeds United have signed Marc Roca for €12M from FC Bayern Munich, as a possible replacement of Kalvin Phillips.
On signing for City, Kalvin Phillips said, “To be able to play under Pep Guardiola, learn from him and his coaching staff as well as be part of fantastic squad is a prospect that I am incredibly excited about”.
Phillips is the second major signing for Manchester City. This comes after their acquisition of star young forward, Erling Braut Haaland.
