Mahmudullah Announces Retirement from T20Is
Former Bangladesh skipper Mahmudullah has announced his retirement from T20 Internationals, revealing that the third match of the ongoing series against India will be his farewell in the shortest format. Mahmudullah, who debuted in 2007 against Kenya, amassed 2,395 runs at a strike rate of 117.74 and took 40 wickets in his 139 T20I appearances. The 38-year-old veteran had already decided to retire before the start of the series, shifting his focus to One-Day Internationals (ODIs) with the upcoming World Cup on the horizon.
The final T20I between India and Bangladesh will occur in Hyderabad on Saturday. In the first match, Mahmudullah had a disappointing performance, getting dismissed for just one by Indian debutant Mayank Yadav.
Speaking on his decision, Mahmudullah said, “I had already decided to retire from T20Is before the series. After discussing it with my family, coach Chandika Hathurusinghe, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain, and board president Faruque Ahmed, I feel this is the right time to step aside from the team and focus entirely on ODIs, especially with the World Cup less than two years away.”
Mahmudullah, who retired from Test cricket in 2021, reflected on his career’s ups and downs. He cited Bangladesh’s loss to India in the 2016 T20 World Cup as the most painful moment, while his match-winning 43 off 18 balls against Sri Lanka in the Nidahas Trophy remains his favorite T20I memory.
