LSG to Release KL Rahul, Retain Mayank Yadav Ahead of IPL 2025 Auction: Sources
The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are set to part ways with their captain, KL Rahul, ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, according to reports. Rahul has been a key player for the franchise since it was established in 2022, leading the team for three seasons, two of which saw them qualify for the playoffs.
Sources indicate that the decision stems from concerns regarding Rahul’s strike rate, which has been under scrutiny from the new LSG mentor, Zaheer Khan, and head coach, Justin Langer. Their analysis revealed a troubling trend: the team tended to lose when Rahul batted for extended periods, even if he scored runs. “His strike rate has not aligned with the pace of the game, especially with the new Impact Player rule increasing scoring potential,” an IPL insider stated.
In the 2024 season, Rahul scored 520 runs in 14 matches, but his strike rate of 136.13 was the lowest among players who amassed over 400 runs. This has raised alarms within the franchise, prompting management discussions about his future.
Despite the expected release, there is speculation that LSG might consider bidding for Rahul during the auction, depending on the financial dynamics at that time.
On a more positive note, LSG plans to retain fast bowler Mayank Yadav, who has emerged as a standout player with significant potential. Sources say Yadav could rank highly on the retention list, potentially surpassing other players like Ravi Bishnoi.
“Mayank has proven to be a valuable asset,” the sources revealed. “We recognized his talent early on and are keen to keep him as part of our future strategy.”
The final decisions on player retention must be made by October 31, and fans are eagerly awaiting to see how LSG’s roster will shape up for the upcoming season.
