The 23-year-old Borgohain, who addresses from the small Baro Mukhia village of Assam’s Golaghat district became the third Indian boxer to achieve a medal on the Olympic podium, joining two of the biggest figures in Indian boxing — six-time world champion MC Mary Kom. The boxer became the first player from Assam to have given the prestigious award.
Lovlina Borgohain won the bronze medal for India in the 69 kg weight level at the Tokyo Olympics 2021. Lovlina is the third overall and the second boxer among women to win a medal for India in boxing.
Before Lovlina, Vijender Singh (2008) and Mary Kom (2012) have won medals. Lovlina has got bronze medals in the World Boxing Championships held in 2018 and 2019, silver in the first Indian Open International Boxing Tournament held in Delhi, and a gold medal in the second Indian Open International Boxing Tournament which was held in Guwahati. Aside from this, she has also won a bronze medal in the 2017 Asian Boxing Championship.
“I am being nominated for the Khel Ratna, so it definitely feels good. These awards always motivate the players to work hard and do better,” Lovlina added.
The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award is given for the spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports by a sportsperson over the previous years.
