Tokyo Olympic gold medallist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra Awarded With Major Dhyan Chand Award. The ‘Golden Boy’ Chopra, who became only the second Indian to win an individual Olympic gold.
Acknowledge the fact that before his big wing of the javelin in Tokyo, the only ever athletics Olympic medal India had triumphed the two silver medals Norman Pritchard had won at the 1900 Paris Games. A solid 121 years later, a 23-year-old from Haryana won only the second gold medal in an individual tournament and a first in athletics for India.
The ‘Golden Boy’ Neeraj Chopra has already been awarded the Arjuna Award in 2018 after winning the gold medal in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. In that same year, he was also suggested for the Khel Ratna. He was again recommended for the Khel Ratna in 2019 after winning gold in the 2018 Asian Games.
“Very honoured to be awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna alongside some outstanding sportspersons. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the support from all of you,” he said in a tweet. The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award is given for the spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports by a sportsperson over the previous years.
