Lionel Messi to Retire?
Lionel Messi to Retire? : The FIFA World Cup Final will be Lionel Messi’s final match for Argentina before retiring.
According to reports, Lionel Messi has said that the 2022 FIFA World Cup championship game will be his final contest for Argentina. Argentina overcame Croatia 3-0 on Wednesday in the first semi-final, with goals from Messi, who also assisted on the third.
With his five goals in the competition so far, Messi has surpassed Gabriel Batistuta’s ten to become Argentina’s all-time greatest scorer in World Cups.
The 35-year-old already has hit 11 goals there at World Cup.Alvarez scored his second goal of the game in the 69th minute as Argentina continued to score goals.
The Argentina captain, who lost to Germany in the 2014 World Cup final and will play in his second World Cup final on Sunday, will be eager to raise the trophy on December 18 at the Lusail Stadium.
Messi and his teammates will have to wait to find out who they will face in the championship game after the outcome of Wednesday’s second semi-final between the defending champions France and overwhelming underdogs Morocco.
Messi reportedly told Argentine media site Diario Deportivo Ole,
“I feel very thrilled to be able to do this, to complete my World Cup trip by playing my last game in a final.
“The next one is many years away, and I doubt I’ll be able to complete it. And this is the best way to end,” he continued.
Argentina was one of the tournament favourites when they travelled to Qatar, but after losing their opening group match 1-2 to underdog Saudi Arabia, questions began to surface. Before travelling to Doha, they had 36 games in which they had not lost.
After the semi-final win over Croatia, Messi urged his teammates to “enjoy” the occasion.
“Argentina are, once again, in the World Cup final. Enjoy it!” said Messi.
“We’ve been through tough situations, other very good ones. Today we’re experiencing something spectacular.”
The final, which will be held at the Lusail Stadium on Sunday, will now include either the defending champions France or the two-time champions Morocco.
