West Indies all rounder Kieron Pollard announces retirement from international cricket
One of the finest all-rounders for the Men from the Caribbean in white-ball cricket, veteran cricketer Kieron Pollard has announced his international retirement on Wednesday (April 20) decided to bring an end to his 15-year-long career with a message on social media.
“After careful deliberation I’ve today decided to retire from international cricket,” Pollard said in the video. “As is the case of many young persons it was a dream of mine to represent the West Indies team from the time I was a boy of 10 years and I’m proud to have represented West Indies cricket for over 15 years in both the T20 and ODI forms of the game.”
“I can still vividly remember making my international debut in 2007 under the leadership of my childhood hero, Brian Lara. Wearing those maroon colours and playing alongside such greats has been a privilege that I never took lightly, soul in every facet of the game – whether bowling, batting or fielding,” he added.
Pollard is the only West Indies cricketer to have played 100 T20Is, and he struck the second-most sixes (234) for them in international cricket, after Chris Gayle’s 552.
Overall, he led West Indies in 61 matches in the two formats, of which they won 25 and lost 31.
While the highlight of his international career would be hitting six sixes of Akila Dananjaya in a T20I. He was a part of the 2012 ICC T20 World Cup winning West Indies squad. He never played Test cricket.He also led the side in white-ball cricket on various occasions but was never a part of the ICC T20 World Cup-winning side in 2012 and 2016.
Pollard’s records for Windies:
1)He is the first Windies and third international cricketer to slam six sixes in an over.
2)He is the first Windies player to play 100 T20Is.
3)He is the fourth Windies batter to score 1,000 T20I runs.
The 34-year-old has been a crowd puller when it comes to franchise cricket. Besides five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians, Pollard has played for the likes of Stanford Superstars, Somerset, South Australia, Adelaide Strikers, Dhaka Gladiators, Barbados Royals, Cape Cobras, Sylhet Super Stars, Karachi Kings, Dhaka Dynamites, Melbourne Renegades, Multan Sultans and London Spirit.
