Jayawardene Returns as Mumbai Indians’ Head Coach for IPL 2025
Mumbai Indians have officially announced Mahela Jayawardene’s return as the Head Coach ahead of IPL 2025. Jayawardene, who previously led the team from 2017 to 2022, rejoined the MI family in this key leadership role after a brief stint as the Global Head of Cricket.
Akash Ambani, owner of Mumbai Indians, expressed his excitement about Mahela’s return, saying, “We are thrilled to have Mahela back as the Head Coach. His leadership, experience, and passion for the game have been invaluable to MI. We would also like to thank Mark Boucher for his dedication and contribution over the last two seasons and for remaining an integral part of the MI family.”
Jayawardene shared his enthusiasm for this new chapter: “My journey with Mumbai Indians has always been about growth and evolution. In 2017, we worked to unite a talented group, and now, I return at an exciting time where we look towards the future to build on MI’s incredible legacy. I look forward to taking on this challenge.”
After stepping down as head coach in 2022, Mahela took on the role of Global Head of Cricket, overseeing MI’s expansion into global leagues such as the Women’s Premier League (WPL), Major League Cricket (MLC) in the USA, and International League T20 (ILT20) in the UAE. Under his guidance, Mumbai Indians secured trophies in each of these leagues.
With Mahela now back as head coach for MI, the franchise aims to strengthen its domestic and global position as it gears up for the highly anticipated IPL 2025.
