Jasprit Bumrah’s Workload Debate: Balwinder Singh Sandhu Criticizes Modern “Workload
Jasprit Bumrah’s Dominance and India’s Struggles in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy
Jasprit Bumrah delivered a sensational performance in the Melbourne Test, earning high praise from Adam Gilchrist, who remarked, “Bumrah is on a different planet compared to everyone else.” Such accolades, alongside comparisons to West Indies’ legendary pacers, were justified as Bumrah crossed the 200-wicket mark with an exceptional average of under 20.
Despite Bumrah’s brilliance, India suffered a 1-3 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with the final blow coming in Sydney, where Bumrah couldn’t take the field due to injury. His body endured immense strain, especially during Day 4 in Melbourne, where he bowled tirelessly. Bumrah ended the series with 32 wickets—the highest by any Indian bowler in Australia—but India’s subpar batting and questionable team selections ultimately led to their downfall.
While Australia’s batting lineup also struggled against Bumrah, India’s inconsistency was more pronounced. Australia’s top order (positions 1-7) averaged 28.79, compared to India’s 24.67. Crucially, Australia produced four centuries and eight fifties, while India managed just two centuries and six fifties, resulting in fewer match-defining contributions. Even the tail-end batters (positions 9-11) fared better for Australia, averaging 15 against India’s 9.64.
Yashasvi Jaiswal emerged as India’s best batter, scoring 391 runs at an average of 43.44, earning him the right to hold his head high. KL Rahul and Nitish Kumar Reddy had sporadic moments of brilliance, and Rishabh Pant delivered a dazzling farewell performance. However, India’s batting unit repeatedly faltered, losing momentum at critical moments—particularly during a 20-minute collapse in Melbourne—and often throwing wickets away at the end of sessions.
India’s defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy highlights the need for greater batting discipline and better decision-making in high-stakes series. For now, Bumrah’s heroics remain the silver lining in an otherwise disappointing campaign.
