In a strongly written social media statement, former India head coach Ravi Shastri criticised the threats received by Wriddhiman Saha from an unknown reporter. Shastri requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly to act and ensure that similar circumstances do not occur in the future.

Wriddhiman Saha had a private discussion with an anonymous journalist on Saturday. The tweets in the screenshot he provided looked to be threatening Saha for failing to communicate with him about his absence from the Test team for the forthcoming two-match series against Sri Lanka in March. In a one-sided messaging conversation, the journalist was seen informing Saha that he was offended by the wicketkeeper’s failure to react to his calls and that he doesn’t take insults well.

On Twitter, Saha published screenshots of the messages and wrote: “After all of my efforts to Indian cricket, this is what I get from a “respected” journalist! This is where journalism has gone (sic).”

Former cricketers have come to Saha’s defence, demanding him to expose the identity of the journalist who threatened him.

According to Ravi Shastri, such incidents occur much too frequently, and the board must investigate the situation to defend the interests of all cricketers.

Meanwhile, Saha, who has been omitted from the Test squad, informed the media on Sunday that head coach Dravid has advised him to contemplate retirement and that the team is aiming to develop younger wicketkeeper batsmen to back up Rishabh Pant, who is the first-choice stumper in Tests.

Speaking to the media following India’s 3-0 T20I series sweep of the West Indies on Sunday, head coach Rahul Dravid said he is not bothered by Saha addressing the public about their chat concerning the wicketkeeper’s future in Test cricket.
